What is Mark Masonry?
Mark Masonry is one of the oldest and most distinctive Orders beyond the Craft, open to all Master Masons. Its central theme is the building of King Solomon’s Temple, focusing on the importance of individual contribution, integrity, and the value of honest labour.
The ceremony is uplifting, warm, and deeply symbolic. It encourages each Brother to reflect on the “mark” he makes in life—within Freemasonry, his community, and the wider world. Many Brethren find the Mark Degree to be one of the most enjoyable and engaging in Freemasonry.
Membership is open to all Master Masons of four weeks and upwards.
What Is Royal Ark Mariner (RAM)?
The Royal Ark Mariner Degree—often affectionately called “the Mariners”—is worked under the authority of the Mark. It is a beautiful and ancient ceremony centred on the story of Noah, exploring themes of faith, preservation, and renewal.
Every RAM Lodge is attached to a Mark Lodge, and membership is open to all Mark Master Masons. The atmosphere is friendly, relaxed, and fraternal, making it a natural next step for those who have enjoyed the Mark Degree.
How Mark & RAM Fit Within Craft Masonry
Although administered separately from the Craft, both the Mark and Royal Ark Mariner Degrees are recognised throughout the English Constitution as respected and enriching parts of the wider Masonic family.
• Craft Masonry provides the foundation of a Mason’s moral and personal development.
• Mark Masonry expands this journey by emphasising the value of skilled work, personal responsibility, and the importance of every Brother’s contribution.
• Royal Ark Mariner adds a spiritual and reflective dimension, drawing on one of the oldest narratives in human history.
Together, they offer Master Masons a deeper, broader, and more rewarding Masonic experience.
