THE CEREMONY OF THE LOVING CUP

"THIS TOAST TO BE TAKEN IN SILENCE"

Three brethren are involved in the toast at all times – the brother with the cup and the brothers to his left and right commencing:-

In the first instance, the Worshipful Master takes the cup and turns to his left to toast (Absent Brethren and  Bye Gone Members of the Lodge) the Immediate Past Master also stands and turns to his right (thus they are facing each other).  The brother to the right of the WM also stands and turns to his right (thus "protecting" the back of the WM)  The brother with the cup bows to the brother to whom he is facing, makes the toast and takes a sip, wipes the cup and hands it to the brother opposite him who receives it with a court bow, he then turns and the brother to his left stands to receive the toast.  The brother who was holding the cup (in the first instance the WM) then turns to tap the brother who was protecting his back – this brother then sits.

This is carried out until all those present have toasted and drank from the cup.
